A robot vacuum is able to keep floors clean enough to reduce the frequency at which you need to manually vacuum. Pick a robot vacuum that is well-trained in navigation, is able to clean corners and stairs and also has large bins that will need to be cleaned out every now and then.

You can also find models that can mop and charge themselves, a feature that may be important for people with pets or kids. A lot of the top performers in our tests have good obstacle avoidance.

1. IRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ a good option for those looking for an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience, but aren't afraid of having to empty their dust bin manually when it fills up.

Both robots do well picking up surface debris off carpets and hard floors and they are very good at moving around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home that aid the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. However, unlike the i7+ or other top rated robots we tested the i3+ doesn't have obstacle-avoidance capabilities and therefore it could be stuck on things like socks or power cords, and it may have trouble navigating across surface transitions, such as from hardwood to rug.

iRobot recommends clearing areas that the i3+ EVO will vacuum before you use it, and include getting rid of any clutter or toys it might encounter. Also, keep the dustbin and filters clean to prevent them from getting blocked. When the i3+'s internal bin is filled or the battery is depleted, it returns to its docking station, automatically emptying its dirt into the station's external dustbin, and then continues cleaning where it began. Battery life is about an hour and a half of constant use. It takes three hours to fully charge.

2. Roomba from iRobot

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in the iRobot flagship line and comes with all the latest features. It's best self cleaning vacuum-charging and self-navigating, but the most significant feature is its auto-emptying bin. This eliminates the need for routine maintenance.

The Roomba I7+ is able to better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your bagless robot vacuum using voice or via the app.

The i7+ is more efficient and more maneuverable in our tests than the eufy RoboVac G30. It also removed large pet hair pieces from any surface including carpeting. Its greatest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin that eliminates major sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s integration with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning routines and move around the room, and even vacuum the area. Connecting the i7+ to these services was simple and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. We were able, once connected, to speak commands to the i7+, for example "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an all-sports car in a sea of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans and buses. It's powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in a majority of homes, but also small enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by a Lithium-ion battery with 7 cells of energy, which produces power that is not fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filter system removes allergens, and then releases clean air back into your home. The specially designed head utilizes stiff nylon bristles to penetrate into carpets, and then pick up large particles or fine dust. It has three different suction modes that can be adapted to the task. It is able to swiftly change between handheld and floor vacuum, and vice versa.

This model comes with a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100% within 3.5 hours. It also provides an easy access to two attachments and the Wand. This is a significant improvement over previous Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its short running time. Its claims on the market that it can last up to 60 minutes of run time are a bit misleading as CR's tests show. This is a typical, not exceptional, battery-powered cordless vacuum's run time. This is still enough to clean most of a typical-sized home, but not quite long enough to get every single spot (though an additional run-through often can be effective). This model has its own advantages, however: it's lighter and more maneuverable than earlier Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeable superior bagless robot Vacuum on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

One of iRobot's most popular robot vacuums The 694 is a basic model that's an excellent option for those who don't wish to spend too much on a robotic. It's capable of sucking up most kinds of debris in our tests, and often goes over the same areas many times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front end helps it reach into corners and along the edges of walls and walls, Bagless Robot Vacuum which is a nice feature.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt to avoid obstacles and navigate around your home, but it lacks the ability to map that comes with more sophisticated models such as our top picks, the i3+ EVO and the j7+ series. It also has a bigger dustbin, and charges more quickly.

The RoboVac X8 is a slick RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 in most purposes, because it has a longer battery life, can change its suction power mode manually, comes with physical boundary strips, and is operated by your phone's voice assistant. It also feels more sturdy and has a more powerful motor, and is able to perform better on floors that are bare and carpets with low pile, while providing a wider array of automation features.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a well-known brand in home electronics. It's not surprising that they are one of the top makers of robot vacuums and mop. Jet Bot AI+ has a cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app offers a variety of options to customize your robotic cleaner, including virtual barriers, mopping water levels and behavior modification docking frequency settings and more. It's easy to understand and easy to use, just as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors. It cleaned up 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). However, it didn't do particularly well with larger objects, like cords and socks which was disappointing. It's also a bit more expensive than the other models we tried which could be a deterrent for certain shoppers.

The smart vacuum comes with an onboard camera that you can access through the app, and you can also create a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. The app makes it possible to steer the robot manually when needed. For example my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that has a tendency to trip up some of the other robots I've tested.
