Item upgrading allows players to boost the gear score of an item to 700, and then add an additional perk. Items can be upgraded by having them in inventory before heading to the kiln.

Certain items can be upp'd for their unique stats (like a perfectly rolled breakpoint armour used in melee PvP) while other items, such as weapons do not change significantly after an upgrade, so they aren't worth upgrading.

Weapons

Weapons can be upgraded to improve their numeric stats such as the chance to crit, attack damage PvE and damage to PvP. Weapons have a flat-rate bonus that increases damage per second. Many weapons also come with an unaffected bonus that is activated when three or more identical weapons are equipped in a unit. This bonus can sometimes be greater than the damage a weapon upgrade alone can cause.

The cost of upgrading a weapon depends on its rarity and current level. For example, a +2 weapon will require two regular Smithing Stones to upgrade while an upgrade of +3 requires four. The number of stones required to upgrade a weapon will increase until it needs a higher level of Smithing Stones. At that point, it will reset back to one.

Upgraded weapons can also alter their base stats. This is usually a good aspect, but it may also have negative effects. For items that only see use in a certain build (Whistant's shield for FB Sorcs, for example), upgrading them may render them useless unless you get a lucky roll.

Upgrades can be made to armor items to boost their performance. For instance, if you have chests or helms it will boost its defense base while gloves and belts will enhance their required strength and dexterity. Armor has a rerolling feature for its Enhanced Defense percent. This means that it is able to roll down to a lower value.

The upgrade template of a weapon will show the new stats it will gain when upgrading along with the relative value of those stats. This means that an upgrade from a sword with 8 damage to an 11 attack-damage sword will result in the weapon gaining 3% of attack damage. However the 3% does not mean that it will hit for 3 times less often, since it is an absolute statistic.

A weapon can also be rerolled by pressing the green button with circular arrows within the item level upgrade menu. This will roll an item and alter its stats but not reset the weapon's level or bind it to account status.

Armor

A few armor upgrades can make all the difference to your survival. Certain sets can offer MASSIVE increases in poison, curse, fire and magic resistance, which makes it easier to navigate through tough terrain. In general, the more defense you have for your character, the greater health you will get from each point. Therefore, it's a good idea to upgrade your armor.

To upgrade your armor, go to any of the Great Fairy Fountains in the game. For example the Champion Leathers could be upgraded to +5 defense, which allows you to keep up with a large group of enemies in most cold environments, and the Snowquill Headdress can be upgraded to +20 defense, giving you enough protection to survive the full-on assault with a few of your friends.

You can't upgrade armor like weapons. If you're playing as a Warrior then you should concentrate on upgrading your armor to increase physical power or spell power. It is also recommended to save your armor upgrades to upgrade the armor you'll still be wearing at the end of the story, for example the Ring of Lightning, Spectral Shield or the mask you'll wear in the final boss fight the Monter Parts Merchant Mask.
