The democratic system in South Korea is susceptible to populist impulses. It is still healthier than was expected.

The country is searching for an alternative development model. The Confucian culture, which stresses respect for ancestors and as well as gendered family relationships, continues to influence the society. There are signs that a secularist culture is beginning to emerge.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of the today's Koreans were capable of surviving by hunting and gathering wild food. In the tens of thousands of years after, they began to grow crops like millet and beans. They also raised livestock, and made furs. They established tribal states in Manchuria and later on the Korean peninsula. They also established an industry for metalworking, which produced bronze tools, and later iron ones. This new kingdom expanded its territory to the southwest of the peninsula and fought with Goguryeo and China's commanderies in the region. Baekje accepted Confucian ideas into its state beliefs system in 1390 CE, and introduced the male-centric concept of filiopiety a tenet. In the name of filiopiety, fathers were accountable to their families and had to be obeyed and respected by all, including their children and grandchildren.

As Korea enters a post-crisis phase its development model appears to be changing. People who are shocked by the huge cost of the old systems support a comprehensive program of liberalization of labor, capital and product markets. On the other hand those who support the old system want to keep it in place by leveraging nationalist sentiments and exaggerating fears of job loss.

Academics and analysts are divided over the extent to which Korea's growth is being driven by these two trends. This article examines the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea's political development including democratic illiberalism (1945-60), democratic authoritarianism (1961-72), authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001) and participatory democracy (2002 to present). This article also identifies significant factors that may influence these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have succeeded in promoting their views among this population. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that nearly a third of respondents were against evolution. Of those, 41% said that there was insufficient scientific evidence to support the theory 39% of respondents believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs; and 17 percent said they did not understand it. This level of doubt is similar to the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from earlier forms of life.

In the past, the majority of the anti-evolution movement in Korea was focused on teaching college students and bringing them to Christ. A significant rise in interest in creation science began in the year 1980, following the inauguration of a four-day seminar during the World Evangelization Crusade in Seoul that included Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the keynote speakers. This event was attended by a large audience of professors, scientists, and church leaders.

The success of this event led to the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st, 1981. The event was extensively covered in the national press, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR began publishing a newsletter called CREATION. In CREATION, the organization reported on its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence supporting creationism. A KACR success was witnessed at the KAIST University in Seoul. Students at the KAIST university in Seoul were so interested in creationism, they raised money and secured support to build a small museum dedicated to creation on campus.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine, CREATION, which covers topics in the field of creation science, and it has sponsored a series of lectures by ICR staff. The evolution of South Korea

In the late 19th century and into the early 20th, Korea moved toward a Westernised lifestyle. The hanbok, the traditional Korean dress, gave way to miniskirts and other style elements imported from overseas. In the same way, traditional Korean music styles were replaced by contemporary rock and roll and jazz. At this time, the famous samulnori, or masked dance dramas, were loved by the public. Baekje was founded by Onjo Prince and third son of Jumong of Goguryeo, was founded by people from the Hangang River area, Buyeo and other regions and also by a migrant from northern China. Baekje, an important regional power in the early 4th Century expanded its territory to Mahan in the north and Jeollanam-do south. The kingdom was in constant conflict with Goguryeo and the Chinese commanderies on the border.

The fall of Silla in the late 8th and early 9th centuries saw powerful local factions to emerge. Gungye was a nobleman from Later Baekje who established a kingdom in Songak with Songak as the capital. He was the ruler of a large portion of today's Jeolla province and Chungcheong. Then, he moved the capital to Wansanju. He became a rival to Goguryeo.

The rule of his was, however, short-lived. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and united Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla, later incorporated Baekje into Goryeo and acted as a peaceful successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms, and strengthened the central government system. This was the end of the Three Kingdoms Period. The Korean peninsula was then controlled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually became powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
