After a string of social media posts that hint at it, Italian supercar-maker Lamborghini has finally announced its first NFT (non-fungible token) project. Dubbed Space Key and created in collaboration with an unidentified artist and made up of an advanced carbon fiber composite material that was sent to the International Space Station for research purposes.

The latest project, named the Space Key, is a work that was created in collaboration with an unknown artist. The one-of-a-kind NFT is a physical object that links to exclusive digital artwork that can be accessed via a QR code that is located on the back. The project is a limited edition and will be auctioned off within the next few weeks.

The Space Key is made of carbon composite material which Lamborghini, as part of a research project in the year 2019, sent to the International Space Station. Once it returned to earth the carbon fiber was crafted into this unique artwork. The physical element is equipped with an NFT serial number that is linked to the digital artwork through a QR code printed on the back.

NFTs for those who are not familiar are unique identifiers which are recorded on an open ledger on the blockchain and linked to a digital asset like a photograph or video, song, or other recording. This allows owners to ensure authenticity and the scarcity of tokens through the internet.

The project is dubbed the Space Key, it consists of five physical items that unlock a unique digital artwork created by an artist yet to be identified. Each Space Key contains a block comprised of the most advanced carbon-fire composite material, which was shipped to the International Space Station as part of a research project for 2019. After returning to Earth, the block was engraved using a QR code that links to the digital element within the Space Key.

Each of the five Space Keys features a different moment that takes place at different times as the Lamborghini Ultimae takes off towards the stars. More than 600 million pixels up each of the five images which were shot by photographer Fabian Oefner.

Oefner used a balloon with a camera to take each of the individual shots, which were then merged into the final image. The result is a photo that is out of this world. It captures both the beauty of Earth and the futuristic, hyperrealistic view of a car rising from the Earth. The Space Keys will be auctioned off in the near future, however the exact date and time of the auction haven't yet been set yet.
