South Korea's democratic system is prone to populist tendencies. Nonetheless, it is healthier than what one might expect.

The country is seeking a new paradigm of development. A Confucian culture that values respect for ancestors as well as gendered family relations continues influence the society. There are signs that a secular culture is emerging.

Origins

In prehistoric times the ancestors of today's Koreans were capable of survival through hunting and gathering wild foods. Around 10,000 years ago, they began to grow crops like millet and beans. Baekje is the most powerful of these states was diminished by the Goguryeo's fall (676 CE), leaving it with only its southern regions in Manchuria and the the western region around Hwanghae Bay. Eastern Buyeo as well as the Gaya confederacy, flourished for a short period of time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to collaborate to expand their territories. In the final phase, Silla, with significant Chinese aid, conquered all other states and united the peninsula in 935 CE.

As Korea is entering the post-crisis phase, its development paradigm is in flux. The people who are awed by the cost of the old systems support a comprehensive program of liberalization of labor, capital and markets for products. On the other hand champions of the old system seek to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and generating fear of job loss.

Academics and analysts are divided over the extent to which Korea's evolution is being driven by these two trends. This article examines the five phases of Korea's evolution in terms of its political development including democratically illiberal democracies (1945-60), democratic autoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-1877) democratic paternalism (2001-2002) and democratic participation (2002). This article also identifies the key elements that are driving these developments.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made significant progress in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A survey conducted in 2009 revealed that nearly a third of respondents did not believe in evolution. Of the respondents, 41% believed there was not enough scientific evidence to support the theory 39% of respondents believed it was contrary to their religious beliefs. 17 percent said they didn't know what it meant. The level of doubt is similar to the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from lesser advanced forms of life.

In the past, the majority of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on teaching college students and leading them to Christ. In 1980 an all-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Gish of ICR as the featured speakers. This event was attended by a large audience of professors, scientists, and church leaders.

The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31, 1981. The inaugural meeting was widely reported in the national press, including The Korea Times and Chosun Ilbo and attracted a lot of attention.

KACR began publishing a monthly newsletter, CREATION, in which it covered its activities and published articles about the scientific evidence supporting creationism. It also translated several slides and film strips from ICR, as well as several books on creationism that were already in print outside of Korea. KACR members gave lectures across the country in churches and universities.

One example of a KACR success story occurred at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, there were enough students interested in the idea of creationism that they raised enough money and support needed to build a small museum on campus featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine, CREATION, which covers topics in creation science. It has also hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also organized local branches that conduct seminars and present talks to school children and other community groups.

Changes in South Korea

In the latter half of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized lifestyle. The traditional Korean dress, the hanbok was replaced by miniskirts, and other foreign fashion elements. The traditional Korean music was also replaced by rock and roll and jazz. During this time, the famous samulnori, or masked dance-dramas, were popular with the general public. These dramatic pieces were performed to the beat of shaman drummers as well as other instruments of music.

The economic crisis has formed Korea's new paradigm of development. The primary challenge for the new regime is to find a balance between market-oriented and state-led policies. It also requires altering incentives, monitoring, or disciplining systems that have shaped the system prior to the crisis. These issues are covered in Chapters 3 & 4.
